Vweb unveils tiny MPEG-2 video encoder IC
11/10/2000

Vweb Corp. (San Jose, CA) has launched its first product, the VW2000 video encoder chip, which
uses less than half of the on-board memory and less than half the gates of competing products.

Available now, the VW2000 is an MPEG-2 chip that delivers picture-perfect video over a broad range of networks, including the Internet as well as in standalone consumer devices. The single-chip solution is ideal for various applications, notably: streaming video with multicasting technology, video on demand, video conferencing, digital camcorders, digital servers, personal video recorders, DVD play and recorders, Internet Appliance, Internet video creators, set-top boxes, and video capture cards.

The VW2000 chip is roughly half the size of competing products. It uses 4 MB of SDRAM, has a 32-bit SDRAM interface and has less than 500,000 gates. Other chips use a minimum of 8 MB of SDRAM and have more than one million gates. The VW2000 also has a proprietary patent-pending motion vector search scheme, which produces a smaller die size and faster searches than other chips.

In addition, the VW2000 speeds time to market because it is easy to set up and configure and has less than 16KB of microcode. Finally, the chip delivers superior image quality because its rate control tracks 60 different parameters, which delivers a more consistent GOP (group of pictures) size, adapts to scene changes quickly and performs well at low bit rates.
