BODY:
An MPEG-2 video encoder chip from Vweb Corp., San Jose, is said
to require less than half the on-board memory and less than half
the gates of competing products. The VW2000 uses 4 Mbytes of SDRAM,
has a 32-bit SDRAM interface, and packs less than 500,000 gates.
It uses less than 16 Kbytes of microcode. The chip is designed for
streaming video with multicasting, video-on-demand, and videoconferencing
applications as well as for digital camcorders, digital servers,
personal video recorders, DVD players and recorders, Internet appliances,
set-top boxes, and video capture cards. It is priced at $30 in quantities
of 10,000 or more.
